Idols Stories

1. A Man With A Big Heart

by Red House

He was born in in Jun 1996 in Kampung Bukit Nenasi, a small village in Batu Rakit, Terengganu.  As paddy farmers, his parents were not educated. During paddy planting and harvesting, he and his younger brother would be busy helping their parents in the "sawah", braving leaches and burning sun from this tender years. He was an expert in rubber tapping too, as during his form 1 to 2 schooling years, he helped his parents tapping rubber in the morning before preparing himself for afternoon school session. He repaired bicycles for his friends! During school breaks, he would do other jobs such as working in oil palm estate, charcoal factory and barber shop to earn money to pay for school uniforms, books and his bicycle.

He went to Sek Keb Bukit Wan, a 6 km walk (he actually walked to school until standard 3, when he purchased his own bicycle from his saving) from his house until Year 6 and then went to Sek Men Tengku Mizan Zainal Abidin in Maras, Terengganu until form 5.   With perseverance and self motivation, he excelled in SPM.  He was offered a scholarship to further his study in America.  After 6 months undergoing English intensive course in UiTM (formerly known as UTM) Shah Alam, his dream came true when he registered himself at California State University as a business study undergraduate there. Even during his undergraduate study he worked in university library, petrol pump station and restaurant to meet expensive cost of living in California. If there was extra money, he would sent the money to his parents back in Malaysia. He graduated in the summer of 1989 and returned to Malaysia, despite getting job offer in California.

During his school days, he was appointed as head of class, school prefect, committee member and chairman of clubs.  He represented his house in 100 m sprint, 100 X 4 relay, sepak takraw, badminton and football. He was an active Malaysian Red Crescent Society member. In the University, he was active in Malaysian Students Association as committee members, treasurer and vice president. He represented his student club in badminton in university tournament.

His favorite sports are tennis, takraw and ping-pong. He plays guitar, drum and flute.  He played guitar and performed traditional Malay dances in university's cultural days, and in formal and informal functions during his tour of duty in Pulau Bidong Refugee Camp, United Nations in Cambodia, and while serving many organizations in Malaysia.  He is a licensed amateur radio operator (HAM), with callsign 9W2MGI.  His hobbies are computer and reading.

We were so impressed on how he succeeded in his study, from a poor kampung boy to an American university graduate. How he divided his time between schooling, helping his parents and active in sports and co-curriculum. His professional career was very colorful.  He served in Pulau Bidong Terengganu as education adviser with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, as Education Specialist and District Supervisor with United Nations in Cambodia, as Administration and Logistic Delegate with International Red Cross Geneva, and locally as Head of Accounts, Operations Manager, Chief Operations Officer and Executive Director.

His words of advice, "make sure you understand what your teachers are talking about during your classes and pay full attention.  Don't be afraid of asking questions. If possible, prepare yourself before each lesson and don't wait to do revision at home. Make note to whatever you are reading and do a lot of exercise on your own."  He also added, "planning and scheduling your daily routine and stick with it is very important.  No such thing as free lunch, you have to study hard, work hard and play hard".  He advised us to respect our parents and teachers. " Love yourself, your parents and your teachers and then other people will love you", he said before ending our interview at his office.
